JESUS IS THE PROMISSED MESSIAH
2Now when John
heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples
3and said to him,
“Are you the one
who is to come, or shall we look for another?”
4And Jesus
answered them,
“Go and
tell John what you hear and see:
5The blind
receive their sight and the lame walk,
lepers are
cleansed and the deaf hear,
and the
dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them.
6And
blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”
MATTHEW
11:2-6
COMMENTARY
After being imprisoned,
John the Baptist became unaware of what Jesus was doing in his public life; and
became doubtful, regarding whether He was truly the Messiah or another precursor
of the Messiah higher than himself; so, he sent some of his disciples to ask
JESUS straight, whether He was truly the Messiah or if they still had to wait
for someone else.
To ask a
question to the man he doubted to be the true Messiah, indicates faith
regardless. Faith in the testimony he himself received that He was the Son of
God (John 1:29-34). So, John trusted his answer.
And Lord JESUS
confirmed his faith, by mentioning to John the four signs of his ministry:
MIRACLES, undoubted
display of power and mercy by fixing impossible disabilities (v.4-5).
RESURRECTION,
displaying the power of giving life, unique only to God, and the only miracle
Satan cannot reproduce (v.5).
THE MESSAGE PREACHED
TO EVERYONE, without discrimination of race, gender or social status, free of
charge, as a call to all humanity to come back to their Creator (v.5).
SALVATION
THROUGH HIS NAME, by declaring that ‘Blessed is the one who is not ashamed of me’,
Jesus indicated the importance of accepting Him for what He claimed to be. The blessing,
Jesus was referring to, was the forgiveness of sins and the hope of eternal
life through faith in his Name.
This was a public
demonstration of a full ministry, in the power of God, and his mercy, opened to
everyone, which confirmed his Messianic claim.
These elements
also are required from all ministries today, and not less. Because the Gospel
has to be followed by signs, and delivered for free to all humanity.
