JESUS CALMS THE
STORM
35On that day, when
evening had come, he said to them,
“Let us go across to
the other side.”
36And leaving the
crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats
were with him. 37And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into
the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38But he was in the stern,
asleep on the cushion.
And they woke him and
said to him,
“Teacher, do you not
care that we are perishing?”
39And he awoke and
rebuked the wind and said to the sea,
“Peace! Be still!”
And the wind ceased,
and there was a great calm.
40He said to them,
“Why are you so
afraid? Have you still no faith?”
41And they were
filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even
the wind and the sea obey him?”
MARK 4:35-41
COMMENTARY
The Apostles had seen
Jesus heal many sick people, even from many considered incurable sicknesses;
but even then, magicians were reputed to do this, and many people of God had
done things similar (1Kings 13:4; 2Kings 4:2-7; 2Chronicles 26:16-21).
Regardless, in Jesus’s times, this confirmed it as a ‘Man of God’, as an anointed
prophet of Lord YHWH, but nothing more special than that. For sure, not
necessarily the Messiah promised yet.
All these miracles,
were not as spectacular as the miracles that Moses did, intervening with
nature, when he parted the Red sea, and sent the 10 plagues over Egypt, by the
power of God. The private nature of the personal miracles that Jesus did, confirmed
his status as a Prophet of God, but they did not have the measure of Moses’
miracles, which were open and of manifested glory for anyone to see in nature
itself.
However, this time,
Jesus proved something bigger than Moses, the holiest of the prophets, today honored
in all Abrahamic religions. He altered nature for his own benefit, and without
a previous prayer and invocation of God’s Holy Name. He woke up from a deep
sleep, and immediately ordered, in his own Name, the wind and sea to stop their
tantrum, and at once, they obeyed.
That day, Jesus
proved his divinity to his disciples, not because he stopped the elements, which
any man of God could do, if that was God’s will and previous prayer; but
because He did it immediately and under his own Name.
That is the reason
why his twelve apostles, said:
“WHO IS THIS MAN,
THAT EVEN THE UNIVERSE OBEY HIM?”
