ΜΆΡΤΥΡΕΣ

Image
Martyrdom is the greatest act of worship a believer can offer to God, apart from the celebration of the Eucharist, and the greatest gift a believer can offer from himself. But to be a martyr for God, does not only mean to suffer a violent death at the hands of unbelievers or while performing a dangerous missionary work in some jungle or desert. An average believer can offer martyrdom every day from their current position in life.
To be a Martyr, comes from the Greek word Μάρτυς/Μάρτυρ, which in turn means to be a “Witness”.
Generally speaking, every time we bear witness of our Faith wherever we are, in front of the world that surrounds us, we are officially “martyrs” of Christ, and most probably we have heard that many times in Church, evangelistic crusades or Bible class; however, in life there are many opportunities to suffer real martyrdom for the sake of Jesus Christ and his Gospel.
Every time we are subjected to abuse, or material and personal loss for doing God’s Will, we are of…

LATRIA AND PROSKYNESIS

Image
Latria (Λατρεία) and Proskynesis (Προσκύνησις) are two ancient theological terms used to differentiate the type of attention Christians offer to the Holy Trinity in comparison with other sacred persons, articles or places.
LATRIA: Better translated as Adoration, is the act of worship a Christian offers to the Persons of the Holy Trinity alone, that is YHWH, Jesus and the Holy Spirit, in one Divine Nature and one by one in their hypostases. This type of adoration implies a total surrendering of the human being and nature, mind, body and spirit to the Person and Will of God without any reservations.
PROSKYNESIS: It is theVeneration that Christians offer to St Mary, the Mother of our Lord, the saints, religious images, the Bible, relics, etc. This veneration consists only in respect of heart and mind, towards these subjects, and actions that would reflect that respect, like genuflections, kissing the object or placing them in honour, etc.
NOTE
It must be clarified that, while from outside…

IS IT MORALLY LICIT TO SWITCH MACHINES OFF ON DYING PATIENTS?

Image
It is a moral dilemma for many Christians who at some point have their own relatives or friends depending on supporting machines in order to keep them alive, even in a vegetative state, and knowing that switching them off would mean inevitable death for them.
However difficult, this topic needs to be addressed because it’s a current reality for many and we need to know what to do in a situation like that.
WHAT IS EUTHANASIA AND THE DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES
Euthanasia as such, it is the act of painlessly killing someone who is terminally ill.
Another variant of indirect euthanasia, is switching life supporting medical equipment on the terminally ill, knowing that this would accelerate their inevitable death.
THE DIFFERENT OPINIONS
Traditionally Christians have opposed the first form of direct Euthanasia, and allowed the second form of indirect euthanasia to be applied in extreme cases.
The reason for condemning the first form of DIRECT EUTHANASIA is based on the consideration that it is a …

HOW TAKING HOLY COMMUNION SANCTIFIES THE BELIEVER

Image
A Human is composed of a matter and a spirit (Genesis 2:7).
The material part is the body and its organs, the spirit is the invisible energy that gives life to this material organism, and the union of both at the time of conception gives birth to the consciousness or “Soul”(1Thessalonians 5:23), which from that time onwards is inseparable from the spirit and will become united with the body again at the time of the Resurrection.
When a believer participates of the Holy Supper at our Lord’s Table, he really partakes from the real Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, and therefore his whole being is sanctified.
When we take communion, the physical part of the Eucharist, the bread and the wine, being material come into our body via the mouth, and from there to our blood stream and all our cells, sanctifying every inch of our bodies. Our material organism becomes literally holy until we desecrated it again by committing sin.
The spiritual reality of Jesus present in the elements, sanctif…

SHOULD PRIESTS WEAR ROBES OUTSIDE LITURGICAL TIMES?

Image
Historically, the Universal Christian Church disposed since ancient times that Ordained clergy should wear their distinct robes at all times, which should not be confused with “Liturgical Robes”, which only are worn for liturgical celebrations. Thus was ordered and binding for the Universal Church according to Canon 27, Quinisext Council of 692 CE:
“None of those who are in the catalogue of the clergy shall wear clothes unsuited to them, either while still living in town or when on a journey:but they shall wear such clothes as are assigned to those who belong to the clergy. And if any one shall violate this canon, he shall be cut off for one week.”
Since then, attitudes have changed and Churches have developed their own regulations, some affirming, some modifying and some eliminating totally this rule. This reflects different opinions and approaches as much from the laity as from the clergy themselves. The decision is not easy because it touches deeply the sensitivity of entire congregat…

DID SATAN KNOW JESUS WAS GOD?

Image
We read in the synoptic gospels that Satan came to tempt Lord Jesus in the desert. The question arises: Could have Jesus really fall into sin? ; and furthermore, why would Satan try to induce Jesus to fall into sin if he knew God cannot possibly sin? (Mt 4:1-11; Mk 1:12-13; Lk 4:1-13).
When Satan tempted Lord Jesus, he repeatedly asked, “If you are the Son of God” (Mt 4:3, 6), before making his evil offerings, which in turn contrasts with the explicit declaration of different demons that Jesus was indeed “The Son of the Most High God” (Mt 8:29; Mk 1:24; 5:7; Lk 4:34; 8:28).
When the Logos incarnated to carry on the divine Plan of Salvation, the divinity of the Messiah was hidden from unbelievers and demons, for two reasons:
The prime object of the redemptive plan was centred in the humanity of the Redeemer, not in his divinity. The Logos of YHWH became the person of Jesus of Nazareth at the incarnation, in representation of the whole human race in order to carry on the vicarious atonem…

THE TEMPTATIONS OF LORD JESUS

Image
The story of the temptations of our Lord Jesus Christ in the desert after his Baptism is narrated in the three synoptic gospels, but in detail, in the gospels of Matthew and Luke (Matthew 4:1-11; Luke 4:1-13)
These three temptations our Lord suffered, cover the three aspects of the human nature as composed of body, soul and spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:23; Hebrews 4:12) and all the ways temptation may seem to justify itself to us. In the desert, Lord Jesus was tempted in every aspect of his humanity, thus wining a victory over every type of temptation every human being can ever suffer, and the tools that can be used to seduce humans. The temptations Satan put forward appealed to his bodily needs, his beliefs and his personal pride, which affected directly the three aspects of his humanity. All other forms of temptations a human can suffer are only variations of these three same types of enticements and the manner they come to us.

WHAT IS LENT

Image
Lent is the period of approximately seven weeks or 46 days that Christians from all rites and nationalities dedicate to fasting, abstinence, prayer and reflexion, in order to reconcile themselves with God and other Christians across the world. The 40 days are taken from the example of Jesus who departed to the desert to fast and pray for 40 days, prior to his public ministry; and in this case, it is kept today as preparation for Holy Week, or memorial of the last week of Lord Jesus Christ’s passion.
Lent varies in a few days across Christian communities. The Western Church starts Lent on Ash Wednesday, while the Eastern Church starts traditionally on Clean Monday, seven weeks before Easter Sunday or Resurrection Sunday, according to the Julian calendar which falls weeks later than the Gregorian calendar used in the West. Other minor Churches, like Ethiopians and other Alexandrians vary in other minor details.
It is assumed that to fast prior to Holy Week, came as a custom from the Apos…

WHAT IS ASH WEDNESDAY

Image
Since the second century, the Western Christian Church has commemorated the Atonement of our Lord Jesus Christ and his Resurrection throughout the world, throughout the ages to this day, preparing herself with Fasting and Prayer as it is recommended by Apostle Paul
(1Corinthians 7:5).
On Ash Wednesday, Christians all over the world, open up the 40 days of prayer and meditation, dedicating them to God through Worship, Fasting and Abstinence.
That is, they fast and abstain from worldly pleasures, including sex on the beginning of that period, Ash Wednesday, and continue on for 46 days in Abstinence.
In more pious times in the past, that included fasting every morning, and avoiding meat and dairy products, music and sex throughout the 40 days.
These times where Christians are weak and worldly, the custom has been relaxed to only morning fasting on Ash Wednesday and avoidance of meat and dairy products for the rest of the 46 days period leading to Easter, called Lent.
On this day, while ded…

I WILL DEMAND YOUR LIFE FROM EVERY ANIMAL

Image
The above declaration, is a paraphrasing of verse 5, of the Ninth chapter of Genesis, when God speaks to Noah about the sacredness of human life and the death penalty that should be imposed on every human or animal who kills an innocent person intentionally, which today would be technically called “Murder”. (Genesis 9:5).
The sacredness of human life is based in the natural dignity of the human species being made to the Image and Likeness of God. Thus was said firstly at the moment of creation (Genesis 1:26); to be confirmed again to Noah, during the time of the second creation, after the Great Flood (Genesis 9:6).
Being human life sacred, it is natural that the harshest penalty was given to other humans, as rational and moral beings, who driven by evil would decide to murder another fellow human, in complete control of their faculties and will. However, the order to kill an animal that kills a human appears odd within this section, since animals are considered to act only by instinct …
